ABOUT SOUL and the Soul Seminar

ABOUT SOUL and the Soul Seminar

Last night, the 6th of September, we had the distinct pleasure of attending the Soul Seminar being held at St Mary’s University in Twickenham.

The day started with great talks from Prof David Tacey on ‘The Spirituality of the Soul’ and from Prof Peter Tyler drawing thoughts and conclusion from his new book, ‘The Pursuit of the Soul; Psychoanalysis, Soul-Making and the Christian Tradition’ (which you can now buy on Amazon)

The highlight for us though was to see one of our own, artist Tim Wainwright, revealing his distinctly different exploration of ‘soul’. This was the first showing of his video project ABOUT SOUL; an exploration of what soul means in the everyday lives of Londoners.

Tim’s session seemed to strike the audience on a different level to the talks of the rest of the day, especially his talk about the journey he has taken both with the camera and through a connected quartet of projects, Mind, Heart, Body and Soul. In many ways, Tim’s video project raises more questions than it does provide answers. Instead of trying to explain what soul is, without agenda it shows that soul is something people think about and there are as many ‘meanings’ for soul as there are people who think about it. The film allows the viewer to really listen to the words of the contributors by laying the recordings of their voice over silent footage of them looking into the camera.

These moments of honest reflection and personal exploration were at the same time heart warming and thought provoking – hinting again and again at the interconnectedness that people feel to something greater, yet still within themselves.

This project does not end here. It will continue to grow and adapt, to capture more souls…
