Good news! The European Parliament voted for roaming charges to be abolishedacross the European Union on the 15th of December 2015. As using the internet on a trip abroad is as high as £120 for the average Brit, we’re all breathing a communal sigh of relief. It’s good news too for overseas tourists visiting the UK’s towns and cities. However, this decision requires approval from EU governments who have expressed their discontent. They suggest the costs should remain at least until the end of 2018.

This shift towards abolishing roaming costs gives us a nudge in the right direction.
The EU may hesitate but the roaming-free movement has already begun. Three is the first network to abolish roaming costs, albeit in selected countries, where it has sister networks.As of April 2015 you’ll all be able to use your devices at no extra cost in 18 destinations ranging from Switzerland to Sri Lanka, Austria to Australia and Norway to New Zealand. In a press release, Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three, said: "By abolishing expensive roaming charges in select countries, we are allowing our customers to get even more value from their minutes, texts and data abroad by removing the fear associated with staying in touch while travelling."
The plunge in roaming costs will result in an exploration of new opportunities as lost revenue will have to be made up elsewhere. Mobile networks must start looking at where they can create value.
